You think you’ve got it all down when it comes to washing your hair, right? You’ve been doing it forever, so you must have mastered your technique! Everyone’s hair is different, so there’s no absolute best way to shampoo, but try out the following tips to see if you can take your hair-washing skills to the next level.

  1. Don’t use scalding-hot water! Luke warm water is the best for washing your hair since it’s not so hot that it will dry out your hair and scalp.
  2. Most hair does best when it’s not shampooed every day. Doing this lets the natural oils work through your hair, which keeps it healthy and hydrated. Shampooing too often strips hair of these oils which can cause serious dryness. If your hair get’s too oily between washes, dry shampoo is a great way to absorb the excess oil and give you some extra volume!
  3. Make sure to fully wet your hair before applying shampoo. If your hair isn’t wet enough, it’s harder for the shampoo to lather, which makes you feel like you need more, and thus you use way more than you actually need.
  4. Make sure to buy the right shampoo for your hair type. If your hair is dry, make sure to get a moisturizing shampoo. If it’s lacking volume, get one that’s volumizing. It seems like a no-brainer, but it’s actually quite common for people to use the wrong type of shampoo! (And, as always, sulfate-free is the way to go!)
  5. Don’t spend too much time washing your hair, especially if it’s colored. You can use all the best color-protecting shampoos you want, but if you’re letting the water run over your locks for too long, you’re making it easier for the color to leach out prematurely. If you don’t have dyed hair, washing for too long can still cause extra dryness, so try to keep your time to a minimum.
